Mercedes-Benz Aesthetic Progressive Luxury concept teased
Slinky study tips hat to the legendary Silver Arrows.
Mercedes-Benz has teased the Aesthetic Progressive Luxury retro-futuristic concept ahead of its reveal at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 26.
The concept pays tribute to the legendary Silver Arrows racers of the 1930s, a family of streamlined silver streaks that went head-to-head with the best Auto Union (one of Audi’s parents) had to offer, regularly topping 300km/h in the process. Rudolf Caracciola took a W125 to 432.7km/h on the autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt in 1938, proving crazy public-road runs are nothing new.
More recently, the Silver Arrows name has been applied to the all-conquering Mercedes-Benz F1 team.
The modern concept could hint at a new supercar flagship for the Mercedes-Benz EQ sub-brand. That means it’ll get a pure-electric powertrain, although its outputs are unknown at this stage – and may remain unquoted, given the ‘real car’ is only a concept.
This isn’t the first time Mercedes has used a melting sculpture to preview an upcoming car. The Aesthetics A was our first hint at the smoothed-out looks that eventually graced the production A-Class, the first car to run with Gordon Wagener’s fresh ‘Sensual Purity’ design language.
