Ferrari SP3JC Uniquely Previews The 812 Aperta To Come

This one-off was commissioned by one of the world’s top classic Ferrari brokers.

Ferrari, we’re told, is preparing to roll out a convertible version of the 812 Superfast. This isn’t it, but it may be even better for its fortunate owner, and gives us a bit of an idea of what to expect.

What you’re looking at here is the Ferrari SP3JC – the latest one-off creation from Maranello’s special-projects division. It’s based on the 812, but as you can see, it features an open cockpit, and a rather unique livery to go with it that may not be to everyone’s liking, but evidently represents the individual tastes of one very notable customer.

The SP3JC was commissioned by one John Collins. Not the pro basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks (though we’re sure he has some cool cars of his own), but the broker behind Talacrest – one of the UK’s (if not the world’s) preeminent dealer of classic Prancing Horses.

Collins’ business acumen and marque expertise has made him a multi-millionaire many times over, with a net worth reported in excess of £100 million. That’s what handling the sales of some 1,750 vintage Ferraris will get you. But this one’s apparently all for him, since the Monza SP1 and SP2 speedsters were evidently not exclusive enough.

Technical details remain sparse at best, but from what we can see, the 812 has been modified extensively to turn it into the SP3JC. Note the full-framed windscreen, the roll hoops integrated into the rear deck, and the vents cut into the hood. The unique paintjob, meanwhile, appears to evoke some racing Ferrari from the 1950s or ’60s, with a blue nose and silver bodywork with yellow stripes. Which may not be the way we would have gone, personally, but we’re comfortable enough admitting that Collins may know a thing or two more about Maranello’s finest and its considerable history than we do.
