Ant-Man And The Wasp Will Have A Very Unconventional Car Chase
Featuring the new Hyundai Veloster, this could be one of the craziest and most unique movie car chases in years.
Car chases are a staple of action cinema, but you very rarely see a movie that adds a new twist to the established formula. Last year’s Baby Driver was a rare exception, a love letter to old-school car movies that blended real stunt driving meticulously synchronized to the film’s soundtrack. This year, however, Ant-Man and the Wasp could have the honor of featuring the craziest and most unique movie car chase in years. If you haven’t seen the original Ant-Man, the film centers on the titular superhero who can shrink down to the size of an ant.
This resulted in some memorable action sequences that played with scale and size. Now imagine the shrinking technology applied to cars in a chase. A clip from the unconventional chase scene in Ant Man and the Wasp has been released showing Evangeline Lilly‘s Wasp and Michael Pena’s Luis being pursued by bad guys in black SUVs (what else?) through the streets of San Francisco.
Luckily their van is equipped with Pym Particles, enabling it to shrink and grow on demand to evade their pursuers. In one scene, they use the technology to their advantage by shrinking the van just as they’re one of the SUVs is about to ram into them, causing it to miss and crash into a row of parked cars.
The highlight scene, however, occurs when they shrink the van to drive under one of the SUVs before growing back to full size to make it flip over and roll down a hill. A separate behind the scenes video shows how the scene utilizes both practical effects and green screens. A tricked-out 2019 Hyundai Veloster also joins the chase, because no Marvel movie would be complete without some automotive product placement. Hyundai allowed Marvel Studios to make any necessary modifications to the Veloster, so they added a shrinking lever over the dash screen and finished it with a hot rod-style paint job. You’ll be able to see it in action on the big screen when Ant Man and the Wasp releases in cinemas on July 6.
